RUNNERS & RACE
RUNNERS: We use the RUNNERS strategy when responding to multiple choice text-dependent questions. This strategy helps students to set a purpose for reading because they read the questions that they will need to respond to BEFORE reading the text. It supports struggling readers because it provides them with a structure for reading comprehension. It also helps students who tend to rush through their work to slow down and stay focused.
RACE: We use the RACE strategy when responding to open-ended text-dependent questions. Students know that they should always "RUN" before they "RACE", meaning they should Read the questions first, Underline the key words in the questions, and Notice any text features BEFORE they read the text. "RUNning" first helps students to set a purpose for reading. The RACE Strategy is a structure for students to use when responding to open-ended questions. When students follow this structure it ensures that they will have included all the necessary information for a strong, valid response.
